Medical Assistant, 735 Hours, 6 months, 3 terms


Occupational Objective: The graduate should be able to acquire an entry- level position in a medical office a medical assistant. Medical assistants aid physicians by performing administrative duties and handling basic clinical tasks. They work in doctors offices, and medical clinics, hospitals helping to keep operations running smoothly and efficiently. The job description of a medical assistant varies from office to office. We will give you the practical skills and knowledge necessary for employment no matter which setting the graduate decides to take.

The MJS School of Technology is designed so that upon completion of the Medical Assisting program the MA will relieve the doctors of most detail work and routine responsibility thus freeing them to make their diagnosis by concentration on some of the information the Medical Assistant has previously gathered and their own physical findings. This enables the doctors to give superior care to an increased number of patients. It should be understood that the MA is not and RN, LPN,, Physical Therapist, or medical secretary,. The medical assistant is more importantly, able to serve the physician in multiple fields in a proficient manner. This program is intended to provide an entry level education t those who possess o high school diploma or its equivalency. No test out procedures are used. No distance learning is offered. The brief description listed is meant to show the wide scope of the program instruction which allows MJS graduates not only in private physicians offices and medical centers, but also in laboratories and clinics. We offer on site Externships and Placement Assistance for our graduates.

MAJOR EQUIPMENT

The Medical Assistant classrooms resemble a general medical office setting with such equipment as exam tables, EKG, machines,, supply cabinets, sterilization, equipment and basic equipment utilized by most practicing physician offices. The laboratory areas are equipped with microscope and necessary supplies for venipuncture, injections, and basic chemical analysis testing. The front office is supplies with computers, varied office and insurance forms. Lecture and audio visual presentations are also conducted in the medical assistant classrooms.

INTRODUCTION - 2 WEEKS - 40 HOURS

During the introduction module the medical assistant student at MJS School of Technology will be familiarized with the basics of the Medical Assistant program itself proper study habits organizational skills medical terminology, including basic prefixes and suffixes, keyboarding, basic computer knowledge, professional behavior, ethics and medical law.

MODULE A - 5 WEEKS - 135 HOURS

The objective is to become proficient with patient medical and financial records patient vitals signs, office financial records, third party billings, and sterilization procedures, health information management and medical practice management. You also want to become proficient at patient assessment, patient communication and education, health promotion and wellness.

MODULE B - 5 WEEKS - 135 HOURS

The module focuses on learning injections, pharmacology, patient positioning, physical therapy, medical instruments, tray setups, dressings and bandaging.

MODULE C - 5 WEEKS 110 HOURS

During this module the objective is to learn electrocardiograms, eye and ear procedures, pediatric measurements, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and medical specialties.

MODULE D - 7 WEEKS 155 HOURS

Here the objective is to master the handling of body fluids, obtaining blood (capillary and venous)) and urine samples, performing various blood and urine tests and learning to use various laboratory equipment such as the microscope, centrifuge and glucometer.
INTERNSHIP - 4 WEEKS - 160 HOURS

At MJS School of Technology we are proud to be the only school to offer in house externships. Our students never have to worry about getting first hand quality experience to take with them after graduation. The hours will be scheduled by the Internship office. The students will utilize all skills developed at MJS to perform the duties of a medical assistant in any medical facility.

Upon satisfactory completion of the MJS School of Technology Medical Assisting Program a diploma is awarded. Each student will have to complete each module with a passing score of at least a 75%. Each student must successfully complete the clinical portion of each module with a passing score .

 

GRADUATION

The following is a description of course requirements:
A: Quizzes: During each module there may be a quizzes. The quizzes will be multiple choice and matching and may or may not be announced. The quizzes are designed to test your comprehension of the material being covered. Quizzes will be counted for 30% of final grade.
B. Unit/Chapter: There will be Unit/Chapter tests/ The tests will be multiple choice, matching, or diagram labeling. This will be 40% of your grade.
C. Class Participation: Class participation is a very important element of the learning experience. Each student is expected to participate in class. This will 10% of final grade.
D. Scenario Exercises: Scenario exercises and hands on activities include first aid, cpr, computer simulations, customer service, financial office management, medical records and patient education as well as various other clinical skills needed within a healthcare practice. This will be 10% of final grade.
E. Portfolio: Each student will be required to maintain a neat and organized portfolio. Your portfolio will be looked throughout for a grade. This will count for 10% of final grade. The portfolios should be 2 inch, three ring binder and should be organized with dividers according to the following:

2. Procedural checklist
3. Notes by unit
4. Terminology
5. Class exercises
6. Resume

CLASSES AND SCHEDULING

Day classes are Monday thru Friday; and evening classes are available Monday and Thursday. Classes begin at various times throughout the year.

TUITION

If the student has completed course work up through and including Module B and chooses to withdrawal from the program. then 50% of full program tuition will be reimbursed. (example: total program $1000, Student paid $750; withdraws during Module B - then student refunded $500);

No refunds will be given after the start of Module C.
